Fiddling with one's hair

The list of pernicious habits without fiddling with one's hair would be incomplete. This habit occurs mostly among women, but it is also inherent in some men, especially among those of them who wear their hair long. So, it is correctly to say that this habit is a characteristic feature of people, who wear their hair long. People with short hair and bald-headed persons can't afford this occupation for purely physical reasons and often have to resort to other pernicious habits to busy their hands with something else and eliminate tense anxiety.
We have already partially answered the question why people do so. Indeed, people fiddle with their hair when they experience overpressure and strain. It is difficult to classify this habit and label it as harmful or inoffensive, because on the one hand it doesn't cause any serious harm to one's health, but brings inconvenience and pain, when you try to untangle the flock which usually appears after fiddling your hair for a long time. While trying to untangle the appeared knot, you tend to be angry with yourself for what you have done. Once again you promise yourself not to do it any more, but it repeats again and again. How to get rid of this useless and obtrusive habit?
The matter is that this habit is closely connected with your state. It can't be causeless. If you fiddle with your hair, it means that you are nervous. It is your nervous state that makes you do it and this is the only explanation. That is why you should treat your nerves. You can do it either by means of psychological exercises or with the help of a specialist.
At first try to cope with this problem without outside assistance. Learn to relax, have more rest, learn to control your feelings and emotions, take things easy and so on. If you are going through a difficult moment of your life, for example, such as passing an exam or a test, you should try to divert your attention from everything, which is happening around you for a few minutes, imagine yourself on a beach or at the sea, imagine waves, seagulls and fresh air. You may also recollect pleasant moments of your life or something pleasant, which is likely to happen in your nearest future. While thinking control your hands and try not to forget, that you have a strong incentive to get rid of this habit.
If you fiddle with your hair sitting at home and do it because of boredom, take up something interesting which will cheer you up. Remember how difficult and painful it is to comb your hair after fiddling with it. Ask your friends and family members for help so that you could control your hands together and ask them also to point out your doing this when you do it unconsciously. The calmer you are the lesser is the probability of your return to this habit.
