Pernicious habits and productive efficiency

Pernicious habits have become an urgent problem for modern society. Statistics show that the number of people with these habits increases exponentially. There are many reasons for that. One of them is a very rapid rhythm of our life. Many people can't adjust to it and it leads to overload, excessive mental and physical tension and so on. People learn to work more but lose the habit of being able to relax. This is a very urgent problem nowadays. Once it didn't exist at all. But now the ability to relax and have a rest is so unfamiliar to many people, that they need psychological assistance. While some people prefer to visit psychologists and psychoanalysts, others try to tackle with this problem themselves with the help of old and proved methods. These methods are drunkenness and smoking. By means of strong drinks people have an opportunity to divert their attention from their problems and unpleasant thoughts about their work. They prefer not to think of their future and consequences of this pernicious habit, they have too many other troubles of today to think about future problems. We can hardly say that this is a good way to relax, but how can we blame a person for this habit, if he/she has no other opportunity to relax and have a rest?

Let's return to smokers. Smokers usually resort to long smoke-breaks not simply to enjoy a cigarette, but to reduce the working time. Smoking breaks don't come to their end when the cigarette is smoked. After smoking, an amiable chat usually begins and ends when all global problems are discussed. Smoking is often an excuse for laziness. It is also a wonderful opportunity to divert one's attention from burning problems and create a home atmosphere. While smoking and having a chat a person imagines him/herself sitting in the kitchen and discussing different matters, not connected with work.

Yes, smoking reduces the overall productive efficiency to a great extent and it becomes a serious trouble for employers. A smoker usually prefers to make a smoke break when he/she faces a difficult task, and when he/she returns to it, he/she needs time to go deep into it once again. It slows down the working process and of course employers have to do something with it and resort to restrictions, which sometimes can be extremely harsh.

Smoking habit is easily spread to the rest of employees and can reduce the efficiency of the whole company. Those who have given up smoking, return to this habit again and often can't resist temptation. That is why we must admit that all these smoking restrictions are justified in the majority if cases.
