The habit of coming late

The habit of coming late is very popular among some categories of people. These people always fail to come in time in all situations, whether it refers to work, meeting friends, departure, business meetings, etc. Even if their coming late brings a lot of problems to them, they go on to come late and nothing seems to eliminate this habit. Why does it happen? Is it a mere inability to reach the appropriate level of self-organization or manifestation of disrespect to other people?

Our habits are as strong as our instincts. Sometimes they are even stronger. The habit of being late is mostly acquired from childhood and retains when we grow older. It prevents us from normal living, making plans and maintaining good relationship with our bosses.

The reasons for this habit lie not in the question "Why does it exist?" but "What does it exist for?" A person who comes late all the time always takes advantage of this habit. It can be evident or hidden. The habit of coming late can often hide aggression, power struggle, a wish to feel yourself a significant figure, self-affirmation, pretending to seem an independent person who arranges his/her time him/herself, a way to express something which can't be expressed by words.

Some people consider coming in time as an encroachment on their personal freedom. Coming late is for them a sort of protest against their freedom limitation and gives them an opportunity to seem independent and free.

A person who comes late often has his/her own views on values; he has an attitude to things different from other people and has his/her own priorities which do not coincide with the accepted norms of life.

To improve this situation is possible but it is not so easy as it may seem. A person must have a conscious wish to do it. This is feasible on condition that a person has an incentive to get rid of this habit. If nothing helps, an employee should find an individual approach to such a worker and threaten dismissal in case he/she goes on coming late. It will make this person think which is more important for him/her: his/her illusive freedom or his/her jobsite. If a person understands, that his/her work is the most important in the list of priorities, and he/she can lose it, he/she will always come in time and won't have any lame excuses in future.
